Why Teach?
I believe teaching is so important in many aspects. Teachers are molding future adults, we're not just teaching them what an adjective is, how to simplify an equation, or when the civil war started. I believe we are teaching them how to become capable adults who can think for themselves and be able to solve problems on their own. I chose math teaching because I believe it's a subject that does exactly what I have just stated. In 10th grade, I had a geometry teacher named Mr.Mossman. He truly changed my perspective when it came to learning math. Before 10th grade, math never interested me and I never truly understood the concepts or why a function worked in math. Most teachers would show me the steps and would leave it at that. Mr.Mossman took the time to show his students why an equation works and would make sure we understood what we learning and why we needed to learn it. He also emphasized the importance of problem-solving, not just in the classroom, but in the real world as well. He is the reason I want to become a math teacher.
Teaching math is one of my passions because all throughout my life most people I have met have some kind of hatred towards math. I used to be one of those students who struggled with math, but with the right teacher, it later became my favorite subject. I want to be the teacher who helps kids grow an interest in problem-solving. I decided to teach 4th-8th grade math because I think it's an important transition period into high school level math. I want to build a strong foundation on their understanding of my math for my future students.
Mr. Mossman sounds like an amazing teacher. Amazing. He clearly saw his role as one that guided students in seeing the content within a much larger picture. And look at the results for you! You are choosing to become a teacher. Just wow!
